Save Our Shores!!

Save Our Shores will be sponsoring this month's event, the screening of Bag It, a 2010 documentary about an everyday guy who makes a resolution to stop using plastic bags. He soon finds out that his simple decision will change his life completely. In the end, he realizes that our excessive use of plastic is finally catching up to us, and he identifies how/what we can do about it. A Program Coordinator for Save Our Shores will be in attendance to speak more about the local problem, provide some solutions and alternatives as well as pass around the Santa Cruz County Bag Ban petition.

Did you know (from the Bag It website)...

  • In the United States alone, an estimated 12 million barrels of oil is used annually to make the plastic bags that Americans consume and in 2009, Americans used 102 billion plastic bags.
  • Single use disposables like water bottles, coffee cups, plastic utensils and take out containers make our lives more convenient. In 2008, about 2,480,000 tons of plastic bottles and jars were disposed of around the world.
  • Ecologically, hundreds of thousands of marine animals die every year when they eat plastic bags mistaken for food. The bags often wind up in waterways or on the landscape, becoming eyesores and degrading water and soil as they break down into toxic bits.

I hope to see you all on Saturday, February 19th at 630pm at Santa Cruz Yoga, near Kellys Bakery. Spread the word! Please feel free to bring along your family, friends and neighbors. Feel free to send around this email, if you know others who may be interested. Also, please bring a pillow, blanket or a rubber footed chair to sit on, as there is limited seating. There will be donations collected at the door to support the film series as well as the local organizations who sponsor each event. Feel free to check out the facebook page here for more information and updates.
